Moving Tips

Take with you in the car: children’s immunization dates for school entry, last checking & savings account monthly statements, last pay stubs, checkbook, phone book from old house, personal address book, anything the lender may require for closing.
Buy pet carriers if needed. (Voice of experience here)
Check repair shops, dry cleaners, and tailors for any items being fixed or cleaned.
Ask your doctor and dentist to recommend someone in your new area and see if they will forward your records.
Mail change of address to banks, credit card companies, magazines, and investment companies.
Cancel utilities like gas, electric, phone, cable, garbage (also newspaper).
Take your telephones with you.
Don’t forget to empty your safety deposit box, if you have one.
Leave change of address cards with the post office.
Cancel any deliveries you receive (like newspaper and milk).
Mail change of address to family & friends.
Have a yard sale to get rid of items you don’t want to move.
Have your car serviced; this would not be the best time to break down.
Make arrangements for a moving truck.
If you plan on packing yourself, start early. It takes longer than you expect.
Get rid of food in the refrigerator and freezer and have them ready to go. Get rid of canned foods in freezing weather.
Be sure that you have any keys you will need with you.
Take back any borrowed or rented items in plenty of time.
Make a list of what you will need the first night in your new home and have that with you in the car: comfortable clothes, garbage bags, flashlight, Kleenex, toilet paper, bed linens, towels, dish soap, sponges, paper towels, disposable plates, cups, utensils, can opener, light bulbs, tool kit, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste, aspirin, and any medication.
